As a fairly new writer on Medium, but with quite a lot of boosts, I am now of the same opinion as you Mike, and no longer interested in boosting, earnings or other "schemes". My many years as research biochemist and currently in demand as a ghostwriter and published poet gives me enough material to keep me writing for many years to come on various platforms, without worrying too much about the old boys network.
