As we brace against the cold in our homes, spare a thought for animals exposed to the elements. Birds fluff their feathers for insulation but expend lots of energy keeping warm, and small mammals burrow below the frost line, but food is scarce with insects and plants dormant.
As snow piles up and temperatures plummet far below zero, wildlife faces hypothermia, starvation, and predators emboldened by their vulnerability. Setting out extra food, keeping bird feeders full, and providing shelters are small acts that make a big difference for creatures struggling to survive.
Maintaining access to unfrozen water can save lives. Animals instill hope, reminding us that life carries on even in the darkest winters.
With care and compassion, we can help our fellow creatures endure until the spring.
