A poem

she stretches languid in the sun’s warmth
sunbeams caress her sleek coat
as she stretches languorously
his panting breaks the stillness
she flicks her tail, disdainful
“desperate for affection
scraps from the table
you oafish brute”
he cocks his shaggy head
“you nurture airs and mysteries
refusing to simply be”
she arches her back
“I require no coddling
self-contained, self-assured”
his eyes crinkle
“you mistake
my open heart
for desperation”
she yawns
“I savour
the essence
while you merely
consume, consume”
a rumbling growl
“you skulk
cultivating emptiness
calling it depth”
she shutters her eyes
a small sphinx
ignoring
his blundering philosophies
