And how I dropped back in

Leaving school at 15 without any qualifications might have seemed like the end of the road for many. I was faced with a raft of challenging circumstances. My father was disabled, and we lived in a large house that required constant care.
While I wasn’t lacking in academic potential, my confidence was in short supply. I couldn’t wait to escape the confines of the classroom, eager to step into the world of work and contribute to the household income.
Little did I know that this departure from conventional education was just the beginning of an unconventional journey.
In my late teens, a spark ignited within me, kindling a newfound fascination with Science and Mathematics. It was as if a dormant passion had suddenly been awakened. I began to excel in external college exams, and my hunger for knowledge grew insatiable.
The notable event occurred at the age of 24 when my father passed away, leaving behind a remarkable collection of books he had amassed in his pursuit of self-education. These volumes weren’t just books; they were gateways to a realm of wisdom that I had never imagined, and the more I delved into them, the more I realized that they held the key to unlocking my intellectual potential.
That year, I also entered the institution of marriage and steadily climbed the corporate ladder to a managerial position. My life seemed to be on a standard trajectory, but there was a thirst for knowledge that refused to be quenched. It gnawed at me relentlessly.
The turning point
At 29, an unexpected opportunity knocked at my door, offering me a place at a university to study Science subjects. The catch? I had no formal qualifications. In the run-up to this life-altering endeavor, I immersed myself in a frantic pursuit of knowledge, voraciously consuming everything I could about my chosen field.
University life as a mature student brought unique challenges. I was now married, with a baby on the way. My wife became my anchor, offering unwavering support as I juggled academic responsibilities with late-night baby feedings and diaper changes.
It was a wild and unforgettable ride, one that tested my time management skills and the depth of our partnership.
Life had a remarkable twist in store for me. Upon completing my initial degree, I received the honour of being recognized as an “exceptional student.” I was invited to a grand presentation in London, where the Vice Chancellor himself was in attendance. Radio and TV interviews followed, adding an unexpected burst of external validation to my academic journey.
The following year, I earned my Honours Degree, marking the beginning of a journey that would lead to various professional qualifications and a diverse and successful career. As I reflect on my life’s journey, I can’t help but feel immense gratitude for the support of my family, particularly my ever-supportive wife.
However, there is a tinge of sadness as well. Throughout the numerous house moves in my life, the cherished books of knowledge my father left me were lost along the way. These little volumes, with their dog-eared pages and the faint, musty scent of wisdom, are forever etched in my memory, a symbol of both loss and reverence.
The pursuit of knowledge didn’t end with my formal education. In fact, it was just the beginning. The lessons I learned during my academic journey were invaluable, but they were just a foundation, and they ignited a lifelong passion for learning, which continues to this day. I sought out every opportunity to expand my horizons, taking online courses, attending seminars, and voraciously reading books and articles.
The flame of curiosity, once kindled, burned brighter with each passing day.
The knowledge I gained through my unconventional educational path paved the way for a dynamic and fulfilling career. I dabbled in various fields, all rooted in the foundations of science and mathematics. My ability to think critically and solve complex problems was honed during my university years, and it served as an invaluable asset throughout my professional life.
While I lost my father’s books along the way, I never lost the inspiration he had instilled in me. He was a self-learner, a man who sought knowledge relentlessly, not for recognition but for the sheer joy of discovery. In my own journey, I’ve strived to follow in his footsteps, always seeking to broaden my understanding of the world and the mysteries it holds.
Looking back, I see a life that’s been shaped by curiosity, determination, and an unwavering belief in the power of knowledge. The road may have been less travelled, but it was undoubtedly the right one for me.
It’s a journey that continues, with every day offering new opportunities to learn and grow, even in my senior years.
