IMOGENE’S NOTEBOOK
Poem

A book to beguile the tedious hours,
full softened by the solicitude
of untiring and anxious phrases.
Shadowy vistas of sylvan beauty
that help me find my way.
A return to innocence
when music was allied to words,
and stripped to its bare skeleton
of notes and motes.
This mere figment of a poet’s fancy
is a fluttering of untried wings
nursed by brooding thought
and seething with suppressed wrath,
proof of his imperturbability and indifference.
The pith and sinew of mature manhood
and the royal arrogance of youth,
encapsulated in the wild whirl of nameless regret
and passionate sorrow.
Turgid stanzas swell the undertow,
while lightly swims the swan.
