A poem

Regret the months spent in fear of spiders
and the words you didn’t say to that one person
when you had the chance. Regret the years wasted
on wanting a different body, a different life.
You turned over, tossed and turned, lost sleep
imagining the tidal wave, the avalanche, the train
that would relieve you of your burdens.
You hungered for oblivion, for the drawer that
would slide shut, for the crib that would cling
to the railing and upend you into that void.
But nothing happened. Noonton, no zippo,
no crane or Dodge ram to pluck you from your life.
Only this, only this, your life, savage and sweet,
taking you by the hand, needing to be lived.
