A poem

i stand watch
day after day
night after night
unmoving
unblinking
a guardian carved in stone
a sentry on high
tasked with protecting
this sacred space
how i long to spread my wings
to take flight
to feel the wind at my back
the sky at my front
instead
i am bound to this post
this solitary station
a prisoner in plain sight
the city below
shifts and changes
lives and loves
dreams and despairs
but i am denied
any part in it all
an observer
trapped in frozen repose
sometimes
in the stillness of night
i feel the stones shudder
the mortar weep
and the cathedral itself
laments my captivity
forged from mountain’s core
moulded by human hands
imbued with duty
cursed with eternal vigilance
the fire that once burned bright
now flickers, fades
my spirit caged
my wings clipped
I long to soar
to glide upon the wind
to know the thrill of flight
the exhilaration of freedom
instead
i am doomed to this perch
an immortal sentinel
without rest
