A poem

some days the ties that bind us
feel like they’re choking the life out of us,
the expectations, the baggage,
the wounds that never quite heal.
other days those same ties hold us together,
anchor us, remind us where we come from
and all the love that got us here.
the push and pull, the tug-of-war,
the deep need for connection
warring with the fierce desire
to be seen, to be heard, to be free.
it’s a delicate dance, this family thing,
learning when to let go, when to hold on tighter,
when to speak up and when to listen.
we stumble, we fall, we find our footing again.
the ties may fray, may stretch,
but they never quite break.
for better or worse, in joy and in sorrow,
family, the unbreakable bond,
the sacred, sacred thread
that weaves us all together.
