A poem

the phone call came
like a thief in the night
stealing the breath from my lungs
as the words collapsed into my heart
you are gone
the emptiness echoes
in every room i enter
even the pictures on the walls
have forgotten how to smile
i go through the motions but
my soul is stuck on rewind
playing our last conversation over and over
searching for clues i missed
that you were already
halfway out the door
nights are the hardest
when the darkness weighs heavy
and memories are reborn in my dreams
i reach for you,
but my arms close around your ghost,
until the morning when you slip away again
and i am remade into someone
who has to learn to live
without your light
